In the Philippines, the shortage of housing units, which primarily affects low-income earners, is estimated at several million. Affordable and readily available building materials are needed to meet the demand for affordable accommodation. In this context, the Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH, together with international partners, investigated the potential of the +5 million tons of coconut fibre harvest residues generated annually for the production of innovative fibreboards. The project was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
